Interactive media session on India and Arms Trade Treaty

An interactive media session on India and Arms Trade Treaty was organized today to share different findings of the involved individuals and institutions to the larger domain. The session focused on small arms and light weapons control ,to address the arms trade and reduce gun violence in India.The session was participated by small and committedindividuals .
Ms.Binalakshmi Nepram,Secretary General, CAFI welcomed the participants and introduced Arms Trade Treaty and its potential to mitigate the grave danger of small arms and light weapons crisis and violence unfolded inthe society. She said "There are more regulation in music and filmindustry then arms in the world". Lt Gen Dr. B.S Malik, spokeon the need for civil society to continue taking a lead on arms control issues and drew attention to the increasing trend of arms import by countries in SouthAsia. Air Cmde. Prashant Dikshit, Former Deputy Director, IPCS who pioneered the study on small arms and its implication to the overall security of diverse regions of India gave the keynote speech on 'IncreasingWeaponisation of India'. He stressed on the danger of the production of small arms in different poor regions in India and diffusion networks which facilitate the spread of weapons within the society and inparticular vulnerable community. He noted the relation of Guns,election process and the intra- migration happening in India. The session aimed to catalyze media interest byproviding tools and opportunities to catalyze media interest in covering such issues and encourage wider reporting, exploring theinternational developments happening in the shape of Arms Trade Treaty (ATT),which is already supported by hundreds of governments and millions of people across the globe. Mr.Bharat Dogra, an independent journalist speaking on the 'Reporting in the media on Armed Gun violence and increasing militarization of our societies" stressed the need to broaden and build linkages while reporting and writingabout the arms menace with other modern problems and challenges as domestic and communal violence. This was followed by intervention of Ashima Kaul Consultant-WISCOMP about the ground reality of Kashmir today,with visuals and cases of landmines problem there. |
